What chemical compound is...
- A main ingredient used to preserve dead bodies?
- Used in the production of plastics and adhesives?
- Often found in men's grooming products?
It’s not H2O (water). It’s not O2 (oxygen).
And it’s not any of the many dietary minerals (NA, Mg, K, Zn) that our body needs to stay healthy.
The correct answer is CH2O, also known as formaldehyde.
Why would any men's grooming product producer feel the need to add this ingredient into their product formula? And what do you need to know about the dangers of exposing your hair and skin to this chemical compound?

What Is Formaldehyde?
Formaldehyde is a commonly used chemical compound that is colorless and has a distinctive, strong, and pungent smell.
Due to its chemical makeup, it is a highly flammable, gaseous substance.
Formaldehyde occurs naturally in the environment (our own cells produce it!). And, we also have the technology to produce the chemical compound for use in products like paints, adhesives, and building products.
Why Formaldehyde Is Used in Men’s Grooming Products
Formaldehyde is known for its preservative properties--the exact reason it’s used to embalm and preserve deceased people.
Think about it…
It’s much more profitable for brands to produce products with a 10-year shelf life, opposed to product with a 6-month shelf life.
After all, if your products are only usable for 6 months, a lot more product is going to get thrown away, which means a lot of your profits could end up in the trash, too.
Certainly, it makes sense from a business standpoint. Not so much from an ethical standpoint.
Of course, at Lucky Grooming, we don’t believe the safety of our products should be compromised in an effort to improve our bottom line. But, we’ll talk about that a little later in the article, so keep reading!
The Dangers of Formaldehyde
Not long ago, I mentioned that formaldehyde is a chemical that is naturally found in our environment. In fact, our own bodies produce it!
So, if it’s natural, how could it possibly be dangerous to us?
Here’s the best way to explain it...
We all need to spend time out in the sun.
It’s a great way to get a daily dose of vitamin D, a vitamin which is very important to our bodies. Sun exposure also helps keep us warm and can aid the body in releasing “feel good” chemicals that can combat depression and keep us happy.
However, when you’re out in the sun too long, it’s easy to get sunburned. Sunburn then leads to skin rashes, skin damage, and even skin cancer.
The same analogy goes for water. We must consume it for survival, but if we drink too much, it’s actually possible to drown ourselves.
Our body makes the exact amount of formaldehyde we need to survive. And when we add more formaldehyde into our system than what is needed, via chemical-filled beard oils, beard balms, and other men's grooming products, our body will begin to react in adverse ways.
In fact, when the body reaches its “formaldehyde limit,” the body responds with…
- Watery eyes.
- Burning sensations in the eyes, nose, and throat.
- Skin irritation.
And, if that’s not bad enough, increased exposure to formaldehyde over long periods of time can also lead to cancer.
This is the reason it’s so important to avoid products that contain formaldehyde and stick with more natural grooming products.
