Beards & Employment: Is It Risky to Sport a Beard at Your Next Interview?

Posted by on

You’ve spent months growing the perfect beard.

It’s thick, healthy, and luscious--the envy of every beardless man.

There’s nothing that can get between you and your facial locks. That is until you realize you have an interview scheduled for a new job.

You need the money, so it’s important that you knock your interview out of the park. But, keeping your beloved beard might lessen your chances of scoring the job.

So… to shave or not to shave...that is the question!

If your mom was here, she’d probably nag you to shave it all off.

The good news...we’re not your mom! And, we’re definitely not going to tell you to shave.

In fact, we’re actually here to make the case for why keeping your beard might not be such a bad thing.

Here are 5 reasons why sporting a beard during an interview shouldn’t hinder your ability to secure a job…

Reason #1 - The Times Are Changing

Years ago, a clean-shaven face was a sign of professionalism.

Yet, today, beards are more popular than ever.

In fact, a study from states that over 33% of American males and 55% of males worldwide have some kind of facial hair.

A good portion of those males have a good job.

For this reason, it’s silly to believe that growing a beard could be a major contributor to keeping men from securing jobs.

Reason #2 - Well-Groomed Beards Showcase Good Hygiene

If you walk into an interview looking like a caveman, there’s a good change that your beard will negatively impact your interview.

However, if you walk into an interview with well-groomed facial hair, you will give off a totally different impression.

Here’s why...

Any man knows that beards require maintenance. And, keeping your beard healthy, neat, and tidy requires dedication, time, and patience.

It may seem silly, but these are all qualities employers look for.

After all, if a guy is meticulous enough to take good care of his facial hair, he’ll likely handle work tasks with care as well.

Not to mention, a well-groomed man proves that he cares about how he represents himself.

This is very important to employers.

Reason #3 - Facial Hair Doesn’t Matter in Many Industries

In past decades, things like facial hair, tattoos, and piercings were taboo. In fact, having a scruffy beard or a tattoo would have made you virtually unemployable.

But today, sporting a beard is actually trendy for many industries.

For instance, a lot of…

  • Artists
  • Athletes
  • Construction workers
  • Designers
  • Builders
  • Businessmen in creative marketing fields
  • Programmers/developers
  • Writers
  • Mechanics
  • And more! facial hair, and nobody bats an eye.

Whether or not facial hair will impact your interview truly depends on the type of job you want.

Before you interview, take a look around at the people in your field.

Is it common for them to sport facial hair? If so, don’t worry about having a clean-shaven face for your next interview.

Reason #4 - Virtual Jobs Allow for More Freedom

According to an article from the New York Times, over 43% of Americans work from home.

Over time, this number is only projected to rise.

With the rise of virtual jobs, the idea of maintaining a professional, clean-shaven appearance isn’t super important.

Heck, many virtual employees work in their pajamas all day, so what does it matter if someone also sports a beard?

If you’re interviewing for a virtual position, it’s unlikely that your interviewer will pay much attention to whether you have facial hair or not.

That being said, we do recommend that you ensure your beard is well groomed before hopping on a virtual interview.

Looking as if you’re well put together does still matter.

Reason #5 - Beards Imply Maturity

Little boys don’t grow do!

For this reason, sporting facial hair often signifies a sense of maturity.

This is important for two big reasons.

  1. Employers are often looking for seasoned professionals. A clean-shaven baby face might not imply that you have the experience needed to take on an important company role.
  2. Employers want mature employees that can conduct themselves in a wise, adultlike manner. Sporting a beard might help give off the impression that you’re mature enough to handle difficult situations.

As we’ve already mentioned, if you’re going to interview with a face full of facial hair, it’s vital that you keep your locks neat and tidy.

Our Lucky Grooming Beard Balm can help you do just that.

All you have to do is apply a little beard balm each morning to keep your beard nourished, healthy-looking, and well-shaped.
